Since its foundation in 1922, the fem - Research Institute has been one of the most important
non-university research institutions for the development of electrochemical processes, in
particular for galvanic and chemical metal and alloy deposition, with extensive expertise in the
field of characterization of materials, material surfaces and surface coatings.
In the field of energy technology, new and efficient coating technologies for components of fuel
cells (e.g. membrane electrode units), electrolyzers (HER- and OER-electrodes) and
secondary batteries (e.g. electrodeposited thin-film metal anodes and sulfur- or NMC-based
cathodes) have been developed in various funded research projects so far.
Through long-standing and close cooperation with industrial partners and international
research partners, the fem - Research Institute not only promotes scientific progress, but also
provides practical solutions for industry.
